Session Title: Impact Justice— Reforming How We Treat Kids in the Justice System
This session will focus on Impact Justice’s Center on Youth Registration Reform and the innovation and research center’s work in restorative justice. These two initiatives, both focused on youth, will put an important spotlight on some of the critical reforms needed in our justice system. On-going restorative justice work in Alameda County (Oakland) work has show a dramatic reduction in recidivism, while keeping youth arrested for serious offenses out of the justice system. Meanwhile, the Center on Youth Registration Reform is working to change state and federal laws that harm children by placing them on sex offender registries when they are as young as 8, 10, and 11 years old. Nicole Pittman will talk about the harm of placing children on sex offender registries, and sujatha baliga will be presenting on restorative justice.
