Session Title: Creating a City Playbook for Supporting the Transition from Maker to Manufacturer

Encouraging collaboration and leveraging shared resources increases the impact of government initiatives. In this session, we will share one example of a public-private partnership that the Mayor's Office of Civic Innovation is leading to support the advanced manufacturing sector in San Francisco. The maker movement and urban manufacturing are both rooted and thriving in San Francisco– the Innovation Capital of the World. In fact, San Francisco has already become a national symbol for both the maker movement (Tech Shop is headquartered here, the original Maker Faire originated in the Bay Area) and for the resurgence of urban manufacturing, epitomized by our five-year old SFMade initiative, which now supports more than 540 growing urban manufacturers.

The San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), the Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation, SFMade, and Blackbird Guitars will share their experiences and future plans for strengthening the City’s capacity to support our entrepreneurs’ transition from maker to manufacturer  - with a specific emphasis on the “advanced manufacturing” space.

In a results-driven environment decision makers often over-emphasize expedience, which can inadvertently undermine the long-term success of an endeavor. Session Title: Reimagining American Democracy

Learn about the challenge of engaging the civically unengaged in a social networked, mobile-centric 21st century democracy approaching the 2016 election. Brigade CEO Matt Mahan takes you behind the scenes of Brigade's first year, including how we assembled a world-class team amid intense talent wars; how we built and tested core functionality across multiple platforms via a super-secret off-brand app; and what we learned from analytics and direct user feedback that ultimately informed the first app we released under the Brigade banner in June.

Session Title: Reducing waste and saving money— the future of recycling and reuse

Explore the future of materials recycling and reuse, and how the circular economy will incentivize businesses to make smart choices that save them money while reducing waste. Session will include a tour of StopWaste's innovative building, one of the Bay Area's first to achieve LEED Platinum status.

Session Title: Civic Innovation Open House - How do you run the most diverse city in America?

Oakland is a launching pad for social ventures and a leader in many emerging economic sectors, including the Maker Movement, local food production, sustainability and civic tech. Come get a high level overview of the city’s diverse and resilient economy and see some of the innovative tools local government staff deploy to remain nimble and responsive to residents and businesses on the leading edge of their fields.

Session Title: Innovative Clean Energy Partnerships

CSE has invited Daniel Hamilton from the City of Oakland, Sadie Graham, BART Planning and Development Project Manager, and Ursula Vogler, from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, to speak on a panel highlighting public and private partnerships with CSE in the energy space. CSE administers many consumer-focused initiatives, like the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, California’s clean vehicle incentive program, and Energy Upgrade California, our home energy use program— but at this session, attendees gain a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of the partnered efforts we are working on.
